  • Arrington Signs with Giants

Well, if you were holding our hope that the Browns might sign cranky Redskins linebacker Lavar Arrington when his price went down, fuhgeddaboutit. The Giants have swooped in and signed Arrington to a seven-year, $49 million deal, proving once more that the Poston brothers have more patience than NFL franchises.

Arrington said upon leaving the Redskins that he wanted to stay in the NFC East for reasons of his own. He also said he wanted $18 million guaranteed, but we don’t know if he got that part of it yet.

Arrington paid the Redskins $4.4 million last month to buy his way out of his contract. It looks like a good investment for Arrington at this point.

  • Browns Fans Lead Charge Against DTV

A couple of Browns fans with more than a passing familiarity with our forums, BamaBrownsBacker and Moohead, are pushing hard to try to get SportsTimeOhio-televised Indians games on DirectTV throughout the typical viewing area for Browns fans. As it is, the DTV approach to airing the games leaves a lot of Browns fans out in the cold.

Props to BBB and that hay-munching bovine for keeping the pressure on Direct TV. Lots of fans from our forums found the petition over the week or so, and the increasing number of signatures has helped these two guys keep the pressure on.

One of my favorite blogs, Ohio Media Watch, has documented BBB and Moohead in action, and has continued to focus on the STO and DirectTV weirdness.

    • Click here to go to the petition to help out Tribe fans in Ohio
    • Click here to listen to Moohead radio talking Cleveland sports every freaking weekday at 5PM!

  • October 1: Gateway to Tackles

Word has been received here at OBR HQ that the winner of the 2004 Butch Davis Quick-Line-Fix Award, Kelvin Garmon, has been awarded with a brand spanking new contract by the Oakland Raiders. Now that the Raidahs don’t need to draft any guards, our odds of snatching up a decent player in the second or third round has shot up.

Now only that, but we actually get to play Kelvin and the Raiders on October 1. Imagine the big smile on Orpheus Roye’s face as he ponders getting to face off against big ‘ol Kelvin for real. I just hope Orpheus doesn’t sprain an ankle dashing into the Raiders backfield. Ole!

  • Wilhelm Dreams are Over (For Now)

Forget Matt Wilhelm, for now. The Chargers inside linebacker, who is a restricted free agent, had gotten some attention from the Browns early in the free agency period, according to our sources. Whatever interest there was in the OSU athlete wasn’t enough to prompt an offer sheet, it seems, because Wilhelm yesterday signed his tender with the Chargers, binding him to that team for the next year.
  • This Easter, Help The Tribe Fans

BamaBrownsBacker (called “Patrick” by some folks) has posted a link to his online petition, which is already up and running. Among others, it already has the signature of STO president Jim Liberatore. The cause for the petition is the goofy and scattershot distribution of SportsTime Ohio televised Indians games via Direct TV.

Patrick states the case a lot better than I can in his post in the Watercooler:

We are estimating that approximately ten percent of the total households in the Indians viewing area are being blacked out of games. This includes approximately 200,000-300,000 households in areas such as Toledo, Erie, parts of Columbus, parts of Akron/Canton, Buffalo, Jamestown, all of SE Ohio, and pretty much all of Ohio outside of Cleveland, Columbus, and Akron. In addition, many of these areas (such as Buffalo) do not have a cable provider that has picked up the games. That means that, if we do not convince DirecTV to pick up the games, these fans will only be able to watch the Indians a couple of times this ENTIRE season. Please help support your fellow Indians fans by signing the petition.

Granted, not every Browns fan is a Tribe fan, and this is a Browns-only site. I know that, so no slappin’ me! Still, I feel the need the put this link here, because I know exactly what it’s like not to get the games you want to see because some doofus makes a dumb decision… just like Modell not putting the games on TV because there were still some seats behind poles not sold in the old stadium. Grrrr… still ticks me off….

Thursday night, I attached a whole series of prospect videos to the NFL Draft Rankings at the bottom right of the OBR home page. These are courtesy of MSN and FoxSports and require Windows Media Player to view, and are available to subscribers and non-subscribers alike. There are more on the way, so check ‘em out if you want to see guys like Wimbley, Bunkley and Ngata in action.

  • AP Story on the Browns Interest in a TE: False Alarm

Last night, we published a free story on Ed Nelson, a University of Connecticut basketball player who is going to be working out for NFL teams. The story is of interest in part because of the success of Kent State’s Antonio Gates, who moved from college basketball to the NFL, and also because of the reputation of Nelson’s representative, Joe Linta. In the story, we referenced an AP story that indicated that the Browns would attend the workout.

When looking over Nelson stories found by the Raw.Feed, however, I noticed an odd thing. One AP story mentioned merely that Linta represented Romeo Crennel, as well as folks from the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings. Another version of the same story said that representatives from those teams would be looking at Nelson.

Scout.com has learned today that the latter version of the story is correct, and that there is no confirmation that reps from the Browns will be attending the workout. We will learn more next week, but there has been no confirmation as of yet that the Browns will be attending the workout or are interested in Nelson. When he does work out next week, someone from Scout.com will be attending and we’ll let you know for sure.

  • Local Kid Lost to the Land of Yinz

James Harrison, a Kent State linebacker that some Browns fans saw as a possible addition to the team, has reportedly re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harrison is a versatile linebacker who can play special teams and has done well in limited starting opportunities. Some of those have been against Cleveland.

Harrison got four special teams tackles in the Steelers’ 41–0 Christmas Eve thrashing of the Browns, but is probably best remembered for tossing a drunk fan on his butt after he came running onto the field. For that, Harrison will always remind me of one of the lowest points in recent memory… the day the Steelers came into town, kicked the Browns’ collective butts, tackled a fan, and infested the Stadium with toothless bandwagoning Steeler fans waving their idiotic hankies.

It would have been nice to turn Harrison away from wasting his life in Steelerdom, but Savage and the gang decided that he was not someone that they wanted to pursue. Hopefully, they won’t regret it

  • Pre-Season Schedule is released

Now that the ticker is up-and-running in the forums again, it’s time to kick this blog in the butt as a way to spew forth news that doesn’t necessarily rate front page treatment. Among these items certainly is the release of the Browns pre-season schedule. Here are the games:

    • Philadelphia Eagles (away): Thursday, August 10th at 7:30PM
    • Detroit Lions (home): Friday, August 18th at 7:30PM
    • Buffalo Bills (away): Saturday, August 26th at 6PM
    • Chicago Bears (home): Thursday, August 31st at 8PM

You can find more information in the Munilot Files Gallery, where we’ve posted the Browns press release or on our Schedule page, which has been updated to reflect the new info.

  • 1999 QB Finds his Niche

Not too many of us are likely to remember the name John Dutton. When I came across it this morning, it rang a bell, but I couldn’t remember exactly where he crossed paths with the Browns. I knew he was a QB who was with the team at one point, but figured he was one of those off-season QB pick-ups from the Davis era who tended to disappear before training camp arrived (cough, Pat Barnes, cough, Shane Stafford, cough cough).

Turns out that Dutton was with the re-born Browns in their embryonic state. He was signed by the team in December 1998 and was throwing footballs around with Tim Couch and Ty Detmer in the team’s first training camp under Chris Palmer. He disappeared thereafter.

Well, Dutton has turned out to have a pretty successful career in Arena Football, and was even the MVP of the 2002 Arena Bowl. He was mentioned in the USA Today over the weekend as he and his team scored 77 points in that league’s version of football-slash-pinball.

I’ll just tag this one “for disturbingly obsessive fans only”. You’re at home here. Just don’t touch my collection of Kwame Cavil-autographed programs.

  • RAC says Pats are History

The title may be a bit misleading, but this is a classic bit of Crennel-speak, which bears an eerie similarity to Belichick-speak, which is itself based on the Parcells-speak.

With the shedding of talent from the Patriots roster this off-season, Romeo Crennel was asked if the Patriots era was over.

"Their reign is already over," Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said.

"They lost last year. Its not like they’re defending champions anymore. The Steelers are champions now. The Patriots still might be able to do it again. Who knows?"

Another loveable bit of hype-deflating commentary from a student of the “you’re only as good as your record” school of speaking to the media.

Note to Butch Davis and Brian Billick: Watch, and learn.
