Barry Bonds Can Drive 755

Last night the living nightmare of both MLB commissioner Bud Selig and the “elite” members of baseball’s media swine finally came to life. Barry Bonds hit his record-tying 755th home run in San Diego and didn’t hold back on his typical Bonds-esque strut as it happened. Something tells me the press box in San Diego ran out of either Cialis or Maalox on Saturday night. Guess which one?

Not surprisingly, the one guy who didn’t pretend to be cool with this achievement was the commish himself, Bud Selig. As Bonds was rounding the bases in front of a cheering road crowd, everyone but Selig himself stood up in his suite to applaud. Eventually Selig did get up but only after one of his peers had to remind him to. Once Bud did get up from his seat, he did so with the enthusiasm comparable to Marcellus Wallace during his all-male gang raping scene from the movie Pulp Fiction.

If anything Bud, how about instead of yawning throughout the moment, how about a token clap for the guy for the cameras? You know, like acting like a commissioner for a change! Dick.

The response from the crowd was about 80% receptive to the feat accomplished by Bonds. Even the fans who wore T-shirts with a "*" on them applauded. Then again, should it be a surprise? The entire series in San Diego has been sold out as well as almost every road game during this chase for the past month. I think if anything it proves that the fans are more ready than the talking heads in the media to accept, that like most of the other major sports, steroid use is here to stay in some form or another. Ok, combine that and the theory of “if the record is gonna happen in our hometown, we might as well be there for it” could also work. Either way you interpret it, the fans haven’t been showing up in droves every night to see him go 0-for-4 with a walk.

One shining example that the ‘roids era has come full circle is that Bonds hit last night’s homer off of Clay Hensley who himself served a 15-game suspension while in the minors for steroid use a couple years back. How’s that for irony?
