Browns vs. Bears Tailgate Talk

If there is a Browns game that you can afford to miss this preseason then this would be the one. All night there will be a recurring theme for both the Cleveland Browns and the host Chicago Bears. That theme, of course, is when fans, coaches, and front office types alike all take on the soccer mom mentality and just prays nobody gets hurt.

Naturally this means we will see the likes of Winslow, Edwards, and Jamal Lewis for about a series…two at the most. The game will be dominated by the final race for the third receiver, third string running back, and maybe punt returner. It’s a game in which the coaching staff probably knows 99% of the fate of the final roster which will be finalized by this Saturday. This game is, for the most part, really just a mindless formality whose only true purpose is to generate more revenue for the league’s owners.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the NFL preseason at its finest!

Seriously, why do we even bother with this portion of the schedule anymore? The only thing these games accomplish is cause people like me to adjust my fantasy draft rankings due to the occasional catastrophic injury. SI’s Peter King this week suggested the league drop two of the games and just do an 18 game schedule. I say forget that and just drop the preseason entirely. Why not? College football does just fine without it.

Unfortunately, that possibility is about as remote as my receding hairline making a full recovery.

On to the “game.”

To be honest, I really don’t even care about this game tonight. I have my first fantasy football draft of the season this evening and that will be my primary focus. Let’s just keep that soccer mom mentality and hope nothing happens to an offensive lineman or something.

If there is anything to really watch for tonight, I guess former Buckeye safety Tyler Everett could qualify. The Bears feature two injury prone safeties in the starting lineup in former pro-bowler Mike Brown and the vastly overrated Adam Archuleta. Seriously, Archuleta sucks.Everett could see some significant playing time for the Bears this season by default. That’s never a bad thing…especially when you are getting paid for it.

In a symbolic gesture to the Bears (I couldn’t find anything with a Bear fighting a dawg), I present you this clip (above) with some bear action. Enjoy.
