Last night I turned on the Cavs game expecting to watch LeBron take care of business at the Garden against the Knicks. What I didn't expect to see was the fans to act like last night was what appeared to be LeBron's first official recruiting visit to the Big Apple in anticipation of his free agency tour which is in 2 1/2 freaking years!
The game itself was terrific. Lately, it seems the Knicks are that pesky "also ran" that just usually seems to give the Cavs problems. LeBron wouldn't let the Cavs fall into that trap again as he dropped in a cool 50 while even calling it to Spike Lee with over 6 minutes to go and at the 37 point mark as the Cavs cruised late to an easy win. James also racked up 10 assists and 8 rebounds as well.
James became just the second NBA player to ever score 50 and record at least 10 rebounds or assists in a non overtime game in New York. That other player, of course, is Michael Jordan.
The New Yorkers in attendance ate it all up. Fans gave James thunderous applause throughout the fourth quarter, an M-V-P chant with a minute to go, and a fan dressed in a Cavs #23 jersey managed to crash the floor and shake LeBron's hand at the team bench...right before his immediate arrest. On TV it even seemed some fans were so moved by the King's performance that it appeared that grown men were weeping, children were burning their Knicks attire, and the women's menstral fluids were magicly spun into liquid gold while watching such a feat.
The Midas touch for the King indeed.
Unfortunately for Knicks fans, they won't even be the front running team in their own city to land the King of Akron in a couple years. That honor belongs to Jay-Z and his soon to be Brooklyn Nets. In fact, the Nets are such a threat to taking LeBron away from Cleveland that this little moment below from last night's game dominated today's local talk radio instead of enjoying the MVP run by King James.
I hate local sportstalk radio. I really do.
Seriously, who wouldn't want this guy. He's the best player in the NBA right now already at 23 years old and unlike Kobe, he doesn't bitch for help 24/7 and makes the other 11 role players on the roster look better than they are. That's what an MVP does. Ok, so Kobe's bitching did get him Gasol this year...
ANYWAY, let's just focus on cheering this guy on and leading us (hopefully) toward a title. It's been over 44 years since this city even sniffed a championship in any major sport and that's all that really matters right now. If he can manage one before he leaves, then he'll have fans for life in this town regardless of where he ends up.
