    BROWNS INJURY REPORT

As I relayed to the folks in the Watercooler earlier today, the Browns have listed NT Ethan Kelley and CB Eric Wright as "out" for the upcoming game against the Cardinals. Braylon Edwards is listed as "questionable", but the expectation is that he will play against the Cards.

Also listed as questionable are LB Antwan Peek and DE Orpheus Roye. Probable are Steve Heiden, Kevin Shaffer, and Robaire Smith. Wright, Edwards, Peek, Roye and Heiden had limited participation in today's practice. Shaffer and Robaire Smith participated in the full practice.

The Cardinals injury report is unchanged from previous days. Aaron Francisco and Jerheme Urban (listed as doubtful) did not participate in practice, Larry Fitzgerald was limited, and Kurt Warner fully participated in practice.

You can download the press release from the Muni Lot.

    FROM THE OBR NEWSWIRE (rss)

Other than the limited injury news, there wasn't much coming out of camp today, although the tireless JT has linked about 20 stories this afternoon and evening on the wire. There are a number of game previews and the usual analysis-type-stories linked. Of note is an article a Detroit pseudo-blog saying that the Lions should chase after Derek Anderson. Also interesting is Pro Football Weekly's attempt to seriously analyze the prattlings of weekend NFL studio show analysts, which is sort of like looking for social commentary in Barney the Dinosaur's Extra-Huggy Holiday.

    COOLNESS ON THE HELMET

I remember shortly after Marion Motley died back in 1999, this web site put together a petition asking the team to honor Motley with an on-field ceremony.

It was an amazing opportunity. It was back when Ku Klux Klan protesters were making in a stink in Cleveland around CBS that Sunday, for reasons I don't remember, and the Browns could have shoved that right back in their faces by honoring one of the men who broke the color barrier in professional football.

As was typical of the Policy years, the organization didn't want to have anything to do with a ceremony for Motley, and turned up their nose at the suggestion and names we sent in, refusing to even respond.

Well, times have changed. We got a press release from the team last night which said the following:

"The Browns will honor Hall of Fame defensive end Bill Willis by wearing a sticker on the back, lower left of the helmet next to the NFL Shield for the remainder of the season.  The sticker will be black and have BW in white lettering."

Kudos for that. I wish you guys were around back in 1999.

BROWNS BACKERS DAY AT THE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

Got this earlier today from the team. I've put this on the OBR Web Calendar:

Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 15th as the Browns Backers Worldwide and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton (OH) have once again teamed up to offer you "Browns Backers Day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame"!
From 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Browns Backers will receive FREE admission to the Hall of Fame with their official Browns Backers Worldwide membership card.
From 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., you can meet former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano!

Also in the world of Browns Backers, the Westerville Browns Backers are looking to help out "Westerville Caring and Sharing" during their get-together this Sunday. Also, the Middle Tennessee Browns Backers, have added pics from the Texans game to their photo album.

DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER, PART 39

I probably write about the decrepit state of sports journalism far beyond the interest of anyone reading this blog on a regular basis. I guess the reason for this is, as an outsider suddenly living in the industry, I find it fascinating, in of a bad way.

Sports journalism is a business, particularly at the local level, is an old-boy network taken to the extreme. It's full of incestuous relationships where individuals take money from teams and leagues one minute, and pretend to be objective commentators, or "just fans", the next.

If fans really knew what went on, I don't think they would ever take seriously what they hear on TV or read on their web browsers ever again. If they do now. The industry doesn't get a lot of respect, and there are good reasons why.

It's a different niche, but we saw again today what happens when journalism isn't separated from the business interests of the subjects of coverage. CNet, which operates the video game review site "Gamespot", today fired an editor who recently gave a negative review of a heavily advertised product. In this instance, if the firing was actually due to the review, it would basically destroy whatever credibility the site ever had.

There is a furor about it all over video game forums on the web. It's a big deal, at least in that particular niche.

Yet, in the world of sports journalism, we happily accept teams and leagues reporting on themselves and, in fact, slowly tilting the playing field to force people to their in-house offerings. We accept team and league-owned networks, and bloggers or fansites accepting cash from the teams they cover.

It's just amazing, but largely unquestioned. Except here. Ad nauseum.

    FROM THE OBR NEWSWIRE (RSS)

The latest from the much-imitated, never-duplicated OBR Newswire, maintained by the calloused hands of dedicated web surfers since 1999.

Two primary themes emerged from yesterday's media availability, which amounted to Romeo Crennel's discussion with the media mob, as well as some locker room time with players.

The first theme is how the Browns are adapting to increased attention from the bandwagoning national media which about three months ago was busy labeling the Browns as one of the worst teams in the league. Romeo Crennel appeared on ESPN's Mike and Mike radio program on Wednesday, and said he didn't really thrive on those sort of experiences. Coverage: ABJ Chronicle-Telegram Tribune-Chronicle Plain Dealer Canton Rep

The Browns offensive line has been the engine of the team's improvement in 2007. The way that the NFL works, though, is that the vast amount of attention is lavished on the quarterback and head coach (in good times, and bad). As a result, it's good to see a lot of local coverage of what is, in my opinion, the real story of the Browns improvement in 2007. James Walker's story in the Columbus Dispatch is excellent. Coverage: Chronicle-Telegram CBus Dispatch Dispatch 2 (Joe Thomas)
Also worth a look-see: Marla Ridenour's article on Jamal Lewis' change of tone about staying in Cleveland next year, and Jeff Schudel's take on the improvement in the Browns defense.

FWIW, we still have occasional outages of the wire when it starts getting slammed by users. I think I've figured out some technical patches around this, but need to get a bit of free time to implement them. In the interim, one way to avoid traffic jams is to subscribe to the RSS feed and get new links delivered to you throughout the day. After over a year using it, I still love Google Reader as a way to track news feeds.

    OBR PODCAST AVAILABLE

We've posted last night's radio program, an action-packed two hours of sheer sports radio brilliance, into the OBR's Muni Lot. Competing with the Cowboys-Packers game and the host's incompetence, the gang wound up talking, yes, about the Cleveland Browns. We needed more Browns fans to bail us out of oru weak show prep, so we threatened to breathlessly talk about fantasy teams and VH-1's Greatest Child Stars countdown unless we got more emails and phone calls. The threats worked, and helped to create yet another radio broadcast that deserves to burned into the cerebral cortexes of all of mankind.

It's posted in the Muni Lot, one of three different Cleveland sports podcasts from yesterday captured in the OBR's hidden dark underbelly.

The Muni Lot is happy to announce the addition of our third podcast... You can now subscribe to Moohead Radio via the Lot. Moohead puts on a very slick web radio broadcast each day, which you can catch live from 5-6PM at Moohead Radio.

GM Phil Savage spoke the press on Wednesday, which is spinning off into a series of articles focusing on the team's pleasant dilemma at quarterback. Continuing thoughts on the passing of Bill Willis, and the resonating echoes of the murder of Sean Taylor make it a somewhat downer of a Thursday on the newswire.

    TOP-SECRET STUFF

On Tuesdays, the Browns usually try to sneak in some player tryouts, and this week was no different. In addition to Kory Chapman, who the team signed to the practice squad, the Browns tried out RBs Ray Perkins (SE Louisiana), and Derrick Ross (Tarleton St). Also trying out were DT Alfred Malone (Troy), PK Justin Medlock (UCLA) and WR Matt Trannon (Michigan St).

For what it's worth, the Cardinals were trying out punters this week. Among them was our old friend Chris Gardocki.

A number of Browns fans were interested in DE Kareem Brown, recently cut by the Patriots. The Browns did not put in a waiver claim for him, but three other teams did, including the Ravens.

    TODAY'S BROWNS NEWS

Today's news from Berea circled around comments made by Romeo Crennel and Phil Savage during media availability time, which Fred Greetham reported on earlier today. Other than that, there's some reaction to the passing of Bill Willis from the team and players, a couple of Cardinals previews popping up, and some miscellaneous stuff.

JT has linked a couple dozen stories that have shown up since this morning on the newswire (rss).

    PRACTICE SQUAD TRANSACTIONS

After getting RB Chris Barclay and TE Richard Angulo snagged off their practice squad over the last week, the Browns had two spots open, which they filled, oddly, with a running back and a tight end. Kory Chapman, from Jacksonville State, lands with the Browns after having bounced around the NFL since 2004, and Jonny Harline, who was on the practice squad a couple of tight ends ago, returns for an encore.

Check it out - we actually have a Practice Squad / IR page where you can see who's getting the daily meal stipends associated with near-rosterliness.

    TODAY'S INJURY REPORT

Six Browns players didn't participate in practice today, as Braylon Edwards, Ethan Kelley, Orpheus Roye, Kevin Shaffer, Robaire Smith, and Eric Wright sat out. Edwards has a hamstring, and the rest all have knee problems. Antwan Peek also has a knee problem, but was able to participate in practice to a limited extent.

For the Cardinals, DT Ross Kolodziej didn't participate in practice and is designated as "Out" for this weekend's game, saving us from having to hear his name mispronounced by TV announcertards on Sunday. Frankly, I don't even know where to start pronouncing that name. I get through "Kolo" alright, because it sounds like "co-lo", which is similar to "co-location", a type of web hosting. So, I'm good through the first four letters, but then it all goes south in a hurry.

S Adrian Wilson is also listed as "Out". If that isn't enough, S Aaron Francisco and WR Jerheme Urban didn't participate for the Cardinals, WR Larry Fitzgerald was limited, and QB Kurt Warner was complaining about his left elbow hurting but they made him practice anyway.

If you wish to briefly experience the glamorous life of a scambling independent publisher of a niche website and magazine, you can gaze your eyeballs on the original injury report, straight from the NFL and uploaded into the Muni Lot in the nearly universal document format called "PDF". Suitable for framing. Or for briefly looking at and then discarding.

    OUT OF BEREA

The Browns have named Gary Baxter as the team's recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, given out each year to players who exemplify the "qualities of courage, compassion, commitment and community". Or, during the 1999-2000 seasons, refraining from slapping around Chris Palmer.

Here's the press release from the team, which I personally, and with great care, copied-and-pasted into the Watercooler.

All I have to say is "Lee Suggs in 2004? Really?".

Here's the latest from the OBR Newswire (rss), since 1999 your source for a constant stream of Browns headlines, hand-selected with tender loving care by occasionally sober OBR zealots.

The news about the passing of Bill Willis came in too late for most of the local papers to react, but there are reports from the AP and a few others. I just got a press release from the team around 8:30 this morning, and have attached it below.

We published eight stories yesterday, and we've already got five more in the queue for today. We'll also have Fred Greetham's Berea report early this afternoon. Check out this cover for the new OBR magazine, though. We actually had to drop one of those thermobaric weapons* behind Braylon on the Berea practice facility to get this picture. If you think Edwards is fast on game day, you've never seen him try to outrace a rapidly expanding 5000-degree vapor cloud explosion.

BROWNS STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF HOF DEFENSIVE GUARD-LINEBACKER BILL WILLIS

“Bill Willis was one of the pioneers of the game of football,” said Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel.  “Everyone associated with the Cleveland Browns is saddened by his loss. His hard-nosed play on the field, coupled with the manner in which he conducted himself off it, epitomized what it is to be a Cleveland Brown.  We send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Willis family.”

Willis passed away last evening at the age of 86.  Willis played eight seasons for the Browns (1946-53) and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977.  Willis began his football career as an All-America tackle at Ohio State and joined the Browns in 1946.  Paul Brown signed Willis as one of the first African American players to break the color barrier.  Coach Brown used him on both offense and defense, however Willis excelled as a defensive middle guard.

Willis was a member of all four Browns All-American Conference Championships, and played in four NFL title games with the Browns (1950-53) and was a member of the Browns 1950 Championship team.  Willis is known for a touchdown saving tackle against the New York Giants that preserved the Browns’ 8-3 playoff win on Dec. 17, 1950, as the Browns went on to defeat the Los Angeles Rams the following week for their first NFL Championship.

Willis was an All-AAFC three times, named All-NFL from 1950-53 and participated in three NFL Pro Bowls.  Willis was born on Oct. 5, 1921 in Columbus, Ohio.

According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, each team's athletes "will be given every Tuesday off to attend to personal matters"*.

According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Scout.com websites and the International Federation of Webdorks, "It's Tuesday, and you'll sit at your computer, spew your drivel, and like it, bub".

    Fine, fine, fine. Beats workin'.

Plus, I have to give the local Browns writers story ideas. They pan through the News-o-Rama drivel looking for the occasional drop of wisdom like a 49er panning the Ohio River for gold nuggets. And about as successfully.

At the very least, it's clear that Tony Grossi reads the OBR News-o-Rama, because about five hours after I spewed old memories about how Butch Davis was infatuated with Sean Taylor, Grossi goes and writes an article about it. See, I said it in once sentence and Grossi has to pad his with "quotes", "facts" and such nonsense. I get +1 for economy of wording. Grossi gets +5 for having a real job.

Elsewhere on the newswire (rss) this afternoon, there are some of those Power Polls (already documented as the "easiest articles to write, ever").

Yahoo (Cole): Browns stay at #7
Yahoo (Robinson): Browns go to #7 from #8
Sporting News (Dillon): Browns go to #9 from #10
CBS (Prisco): Browns go to #7 from #8

Folks in the Watercooler have a bunch more they've collected.

By the way, Robinson, I still remember your column where you said it was a "done deal" that the Browns were going to take Broderick Bunkley in the 2006 draft. I mean, it's okay to take a shot in the dark sometimes, but if you're cocky about it, you get nerds making fun of you for it one-and-a-half years later. Neener, neener.

Lastly, the media packet for this weekend's game at Arizona has been uploaded to the Muni Lot.

    * Or something like that. You think I'm actually going to read the CBA to find out? It's boring and legalese gives me a headache.

    YOUR SPONSOR PATRONAGE VOTE COUNTS

It's time for the NFL to grab more internet ad views by playing off fans pride in their teams.

I once asked if we could put these polls on independent sites as long as they fed into the NFL's official tallies. The answer, of course, was "no", because the NFL is more interested in getting people to look at Fed Ex and Pepsi ads than to increase involvement in these things. Then I said "Sheesh, fine. Whatever, ya know, no biggie. Stop looking at me like that. I'll find my way out myself, thanks. Don't be so grabby. No, I won't want to be flung out the... ouch."

The Browns have two players up for (CORPORATION)(THING) of the (WEEK/MONTH/YEAR) awards this week.

To vote for Jamal Lewis as (FED EX)(GROUND PLAYER) of the (WEEK): CLICK HERE

His competition is Frank Gore (cough *stiff* cough) and Justin Fargas (named after a cartoon teacher on Family Guy). If either of those two guys won, it would be an injustice. (Discuss)

I didn't even bother to see who his competition is. They all stink, I'm sure. Go vote for Brandon, so he wins a free cell phone or whatever. He'd vote for you. (Discuss)

By the way, when you go to that DIET PEPSI thing, there's an ad at the top which talks about a "Diet Pepsi Mix". If I was more suspicious, I might think they're trying to plant the suggestion that you should mix Diet Pepsi with booze. They want you to mix it with rum, gin, vodka or something, I guess. Unfortunately, as an experienced drunk guy, I know that the only thing that really goes well with booze is more booze. And vomiting, headaches, and the occasional arrest. Oh, and vague memories of hurling goats at passing cars. Perhaps that's just me. I digress. Vote for these things, if you want.

BROWNS PLAYERS TALK ABOUT SEAN TAYLOR

Some quotes released by the team today. There's nothing remotely funny about this.

TE Kellen Winslow on the death of Sean Taylor:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Sean Taylor's family,” said Winslow. “The University of Miami is one big family and we lost a brother today.  Sean and I had a special bond. We came in to college together, we left for the NFL the same year and were drafted right next to each other.  Sean's future was taken away from him by a senseless act of violence. I am at a loss for words to describe the pain I feel for Sean and his family right now.”

QB Ken Dorsey on the death of Sean Taylor:

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend and former teammate, Sean Taylor.  Sean was an intense competitor and a great teammate at the University of Miami.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.”

    FROM THE OBR NEWSWIRE (rss)

RAC gave the players off Monday, as he usually does after a win (and even some losses), so all that's going to come out of Berea are stories which spin off of his usual innocuous comments. There's no media available on Tuesday, so don't expect much in the way of news throughout the day.

Here's an item that flew under radar, for the most part: the Browns had another player snagged off their Practice Squad. This time is was big Richard Angulo, who was snatched by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Further signs that the Browns roster is improving, and that there's high regard for bottom-of-the-roster players being acquired by Savage.

I'm sure the grass would grow better if they didn't leave cars "Weun gyun fix up right sumday" on it... Then again, what sort of vegetation actually flourishes under those smog-filled skies? They're lucky to grow algae on the stuff in that place.

    Way to represent, Pittsburgh.

What a mess. The only way Yinzburgh could improve on things is if someone flushed a bag of pork rinds down the toilet during a Kenny freaking Chesney concert and caused a humongous backup that flooded out the stadium. Oh, wait. Nevermind.

OTHER STUFF: BigDaddy79 posted a recap of The Point After in the forums... Speaking of the forums, there are a bunch of Browns fans who will be at the Cardinals game shouting out to each other via a thread in the Cooler... I still remember with some tension how enamored Butch Davis was with Sean Taylor during the draft. Fortunately he was gone one selection before we picked TE Kellen Winslow.

Apparently the folks at The Big Lead aren't familiar with Cormac McCarthy, but my guess is that they wouldn't like the book either. I'm not sure "a cool gun" is what McCarthy was going for there. Anyhow, I still haven't seen No Country for Old Men, but plan to as soon as my wife and I get a free evening. Like a lot of Americans, we both work two jobs, so free time is hard to come by...

    RANDOM STUFF OF GREAT BROWNSNESS

Apparently a lot of Browns fans got stuck in nasty traffic on I-71 heading back to Columbus due to nasty weather in Medina County. Hope all the Browns fans made it back home okay... Listening to "Mike and Mike" on the radio this morning, it was clear neither of the hosts actually saw any of the game, as Mike Golic was falling all over Derek Anderson, who wasn't really the story of the game... The way that Kellen Winslow was snatching the ball out of the air yesterday won't come as a surprise to anyone who has watched training camp practices. There's just something about the way he yanks the ball out of the air that grabs your attention...

Another article about how important Albert Haynesworth is to the Titans. He might look good in a Browns uniform, but we'll wait until the off-season to pursue that in earnest... The Texans are ruing lost opportunities against the Browns, blaming themselves for losing the the game. Both teams missed out on potential big plays during the game, showing that the Texans and Browns are still short of the best NFL squads...

MORE STUFF: The New York Post has figured out that the NFL is to blame for the NFL Network mess and games being yanked away from fans. Welcome to the Greed-Off 2007 party, Phil Mushnick... Get better, Juan Lara...

    FROM THE EMAIL IN-BOX (barry@theobr.com)

"I’m a long time visitor to your site and a long time listener to the podcasts.  I’ve lived in Southeast Asia for almost twenty years, and I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do.  Because of the OBR, I know more and am more up to date on Browns happenings than my little brother who lives in Dayton.  Keep fighting the good fight!

Also, can you believe this season!  I’ve been so pessimistic and cynical for so long that I’m having a really difficult time reconciling the Brown’s performance with reality.  Having said that, its been incredibly fun in a hallucinogenic kind of way.  I just hope I don’t wake (sober) up.  Five games to go, and now in spite of myself, I’m starting to let thoughts of the playoffs creep into my consciousness.

Enough of that already; send my regards to Fred Greetham and all your colleagues."

    - Tim, Singapore

Thanks for the email, Tim. This is a fun time to be a Browns fan, as the team is finally rewarding those of us who have stuck with them during all those dark years.

I remember when we first started really focusing on doing Browns news via the web when the team returned in 1999 (prior to that, the site was focused mostly on mocking Art Modell - a rich subject for parody, but one that was simply too easy).

When we first started getting web site stats, it was amazing to see where the hits were coming from... Browns are truly all over the planet. Last night, I heard from a Browns fan in Belfast, Ireland and this morning read your email from Singapore, on the opposite side of the planet. We have a lot of visitors from the Armed Forces stationed in Iraq and elsewhere.

When we started this thing, it was mostly to have fun and snag the occasional free beer. That's worked out alright, and if we can help Browns fans around the world feel closer to their team, well, we'll take that as well. This internet thing is good for something, I guess. GO BROWNS!!

John S. from Wisconsin emailed me with the news that the resurgent Browns have even caused from orange and brown sightings in Packerland:

Less than an hour ago I ran into a Browns' fan at the grocery store.  Do you have any idea how rare that is in Packerland? We talked about this crazy marvelous season and it felt great not to lament, but rather celebrate the success of this unlikely bunch. I choose to interpret that chance meeting as a positive omen on today's game. We resume the battle in an hour and how about this: the game is televised here, a very unusual occurrence.

A NICE GESTURE FROM YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD GREEDY SNEAKS

The NFL Network will take time off from manipulating fans and demonizing cable companies to replay the Browns home victory over the Houston Texans on Monday at 7PM. Those of you who have access to the NFL's latest cash grab - a group that does not include yours truly - can probably put aside your concerns about the NFL's weird desire to pretend that it can "report" on itself long enough to watch.

The rest of us will sleep safely knowing that Jerry Jones refuses to abide by that irritating cease-and-desist order from Comcast. He's a fighter for the people, that Jerry.

  • Browns-Texans: Second Half Analysis

    THIRD QUARTER

Both teams came out conservatively in the second half, and got themselves an exchange of punts for their troubles. On the Browns second possession, however, the Browns ground game began to come to life.

Cleveland's offensive line has clearly started to beat down the quick and talented front four of the Texans, as evidenced by a number of runs for ten yards or so on the drive. While the possession resulted in just a 25-yard Dawson field goal, it set the Browns up for further success down the road by not only beating down the speedy Texans front line but by possibly convincing the Texans safeties to cheat up a bit.

The Browns had a very fortunate exchange on the next two possessions. With the Texans driving partially thanks to a dubious pass interference call, Owen Daniels fumbled the ball after being hit by Kamerion Wimbley wiping out the drive. When the Browns got the ball back, Joe Thomas allowed his first sack of the year to Mario Williams, causing DA to fumble the ball. But Thomas covered it, keeping possession. The bounce of the ball in the third quarter allowed the Browns to hold onto their fragile seven point lead.

As the teams exchanged punts in the third, it was the Browns running attack, established early in the game, which finally paid off for the Browns as they kept the Texans defense on the field.

Although the Browns hold onto the lead, the conservative offensive strategy is still questionable, as they have failed to really take advantage of the weak Texans secondary. The Browns secondary, meanwhile, has played admirably without Eric Wright, with Brandon McDonald having a particularly strong showing.

    FOURTH QUARTER

While the Browns offense sputtered to begin the fourth, a nice Zastudil punt put the Texans back on their eleven, a situation made worse after an incompletion and a holding call. With the Texans backed up against the Dawg Pound, two successive incompletions were created by blanket coverage on Andre Johnson (by Brandon McDonald) and Kevin Walter (Leigh Bodden). The Browns secondary really stepping it up today with Wright out.

Tanks to the defensive stand, the Browns got the ball back at the Texans 35 yard line. Again, Chudzinski sticks to the ground, but the resurgent Texans front seven limited what the Browns could do. The only play of note on the drive was a very nice 21 yard throw to Winslow across the middle.

The drive stalled after two Lewis runs got only three and Heiden couldn't pull in a third down. Phil Dawson nails the field goal to make it 20-10.

With the Browns now ahead by two scores, the Texans commit to the air. It turns out to be a mistake as the Browns secondary rises again to the occasion. Schaub is sacked by Antwan Peek after not being able to find anyone open on first down and on second down, Brandon McDonald, yes, him again, plucked off a pass intended for Andre Johnson, giving the Browns the ball back deep in enemy territory. Chud plays it conservative again, using just runs to Lewis and a single throw to Winslow to punch the ball in for a 27-10 lead.

Down three scores, Schaub comes out throwing and in a hurry-up offense. It works, knocking the Browns defense off-balance and allowing the Texans to move quickly down to the 21 of the Browns on three passes. At that point, however, the Browns settle down and at least force the Texans to burn some clock before a touchdown to Owen Daniels made it 27-17.

The subsequent on-side kick failed thanks to Nick Sorensen's recovery, and the Browns went back to grinding it out with the and the ball in Texans territory. Jamal Lewis continued to beat on the Texans tired defensive line, padding his stats and running out the clock.

In all, a game that - per usual for the NFL - went in a different direction than many would have predicted. The Browns were conservative on offense, grinding out rushing yards behind a stellar offensive line which has become a better run blocking unit with Ryan Tucker replacing Seth McKinney. The approach worked, thanks not only to the line's performance, but also due to a surprisingly strong showing by the Browns defensive secondary, sparked by rookie Brandon McDonald and veteran corner Leigh Bodden.

For a Cleveland team that has had good fortune in 2007, the bounces continued to go their way today, and a surprisingly safe approach on offense created enough points to come out on top. Jamal Lewis finished with 29 runs for 134 yards (one touchdown) and Kellen Winslow was the top receiver with 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.

The Browns go to 7-4 and, thanks to losses by both the Texans and Titans, look more and more like a playoff team.

  • OBR News-o-Rama: 11/25 Halftime

    OVERVIEW

The Browns lead at the half 14-10 in a battle between two evenly matched teams. The strength of the Browns offensive line has been the difference, giving Derek Anderson time to find open receivers in the red zone. Anderson has hit Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards for touchdowns, while the Texans have managed a field goal and one touchdown pass.

That Browns offensive line as the key differentiation between the two teams has been made more evident by an inconsistent performance by Derek Anderson in the first half. Anderson has made some excellent passes when given time, but has also been spotting in missing some open receivers and throwing a key interception.

Superb pass protection against an excellent Texans front four has allowed the Browns to take advantage of weaknesses in the Texans secondary, however, although Rob Chudzinski seemed unenthusiastic about going downfield early in the game.

This contest could go either way as neither team is clearly dominant in either phase of the game. The Browns and Texans are fairly close in terms of their competitiveness, with the Browns offensive line doing a good job of dulling the primary strength of the Texans. Turnovers and special teams could determine the outcome. I am worried about the Browns defensive line tiring in the second half as they have only one backup lineman (Louis Leonard) remaining after Simon Fraser left with an injury. Ethan Kelley was inactive due to a knee injury.

    FIRST HALF ANALYSIS

Rob Chudzinski's play-calling to start the game seemed a bit odd, and very conservative. The Texans are strong up-front, particularly in the defensive line, and have a battered secondary, so the Browns have focused on the short pass and running the ball?

Sure, the Browns need to make the Texans recognize the run, but the Browns failed to go downfield at all in their first two drives and paid for it by handing the Texans the ball back twice in short order. Without stretching the field, the Browns couldn't effectively run.

The Texans were more aggressive to start. Schaub was the first to stretch the field, and it paid off with a 7-0 Texans lead in the first quarter.

The Texans, overall, mixed up the run and pass to great effect during the first quarter. Leigh Bodden seemed to have problems in coverage, and the Browns were fortunate that Schaub overthrew Owen Daniel on their second drive. Daniel had gotten behind coverage and would have been open for a TD if Schaub had hit him.

After the Texans score, the Browns decided to go downfield, finally. Anderson seemed locked on Edwards, but with good results most of the time. It's clear that the Texans were rolling coverage over to Edwards, which left Joe Jurevicius open for a 25-yarder and later freed up Jamal Lewis for a powerful run around the right side. Edwards found a hole in the zone and the Browns tied the score at seven. One Chudzinski and Anderson started going downfield, things turned around.

After the Browns score, Grantham stopped blitzing and just rushed three. The net result was that Schaub had time, but good coverage by Brandon McDonald knocking the ball away from Andre Johnson and Brodney Pool, nailing Owen Daniels to knock a pass free, stopped their drive.

Both teams were hurt by poor kicking. A Texans punt gave the Browns the ball in Texans territory in the first, and a poor kickoff by Phil Dawson gave the Texans a short field in the second (which turned into a Kris Brown field goal).

    OTHER NOTES

I didn't think Darnell Dinkins would be with the Browns this year after bringing back several returns with special teams penalties. He did it again today. This might explain why the Browns constantly rotate TEs through the practice squad.

DE Simon Fraser left the game with an injury to his right knee, hit return questionable. That leaves the Browns with only four defensive linemen (R. Smith, S. Smith, Roye, Leonard). Yikes.

    INACTIVES

As reported on the live feed, Browns inactives today were CB Eric Wright, CB Ricardo Colclough, RB Jerome Harrison, OL Isaac Sowells, C Greg Eslinger, DL Ethan Kelley, WR Travis "Why am I here?" Wilson, and Ken Dorsey (third QB). Shaun Smith started at NT. Daven Holly started at LCB for Eric Wright.

Texans inactives were: CB Jamar Fletcher, RB Ahman Green, RB Darius Walker, DE Shantee Orr, G Kasey Studdard, T Jordan Black, T Brandon Frye, TE Jeb Putzier. RB Ron Dayne started.

    FROM THE PRESS BOX

A sign that the Browns are getting more successful... national writers have descended on Cleveland to figure out what's happened here. ESPN's John Clayton is among the writers who have suddenly discovered Cleveland after a decade or so, and he's here today. If they keep winning, there will be more of it.

Here in the press box, they have TVs scattered around, and I'm unfortunate enough to be seated by one that has the CBS pre-game show. The sound isn't on, so that's a help. At one point, I saw a graphic that said "Should Vince Young become a pocket passer?". LOL... yeah, that's why the Titans drafted him. Anyhow, apparently Emmitt Smith called RAC "Romeo Cornell" at some point. I not only don't watch those shows, I actively loathe them to the point where I would like to see everyone involved beaten savagely with croquet mallets. This is an unusual reaction for me, since I'm such a mellow guy, but those network pre-game shows bring it out of me.

    PRE-GAME BROWNS NEWS

Frankly, there's not a lot of new information on the newswire (rss) again this morning. The team is in pre-game lockdown mode, there was no practice or any sort of roster moves on Saturday, and no media availability. Which means, no real news in this morning's fish-wraps.

There are a lot of the usual game previews (here's ours), some player profile pieces, and a few status resets. Plus, a little open-mouthed and somewhat stunned pieces from out of town noting that the Browns don't suck this year. Those are always a kick.

Fellow Muni Lot blogger Ace Davis and I were emailing back and forth this morning, talking about how much fun it is to track a winning team. I started my first Browns website back in 1996, and Ace was probably the first Browns fan to blog anywhere on the 'net. We've both got a few years into doing this.

It's almost tough, after all this time, to figure out how to deal with a franchise that is winning now and seems to have an even brighter future. I've been detailing woe and misery for the last eleven years, with only a few brief interludes of optimism. All I can tell you is that I'm having more fun with pro football now than I have had in years.

Fun doesn't always equate to "interesting news", however. There isn't much going on today. Saturday is typically a light news day in any event. Today's stories focus on the injury situation going into Sunday's game (already largely covered here), recent fines levied on Jamal Lewis and Haloti Ngata, and your regularly scheduled game preview articles.

Speaking of Ace Davis, check out his take on the Lewis and Ngata fines here.

Also, I'm getting a chuckle out of how Browns writers continue to point to WKYC's (apparently erroneous) reports on Wright's injury, when the OBR has already provided inside information about the situation which is proving right every step of the way. Of course, Jim Donovan is far more respectable than the OBR, and a better source of info, I'm sure. I know that Browns quarterback David Carr would agree. (LOL, sorry, had to do it).

THE LISTENER LICENSE: As a content producer via the OBR,  I'm forced to see both sides of the copyright and file sharing issues. On one hand, I believe that businesses have to adapt their business models to the new technology. Having a libertarian bent, I'm generally against trying to legislate behavior, especially when the government and most citizens have no clue how an area will evolve. On the other, of course, having folks copy-and-paste our stuff into message boards is like having someone come into your house and rifle through your wallet. One thing I'm sure of is that putting faith in legislatures and corporations to solve the problems is probably misplaced. This dark rant on Mashable rings particularly true. I can't argue with the following sentiment: "When the Government gets involved with enforcement of civil technology and intellectual property laws, things get FUBARed."

THIS MORNING'S GREED-OFF 2007 UPDATE: Sports Business Digest has a nice recap of the carnage. The difference in perspective between the author of that blog and myself is that I've been more impacted personally by the NFL's tendency to strong-arm fans and independent news organizations. As a result, I guess I'm more amused to see the shoe on the other foot, so to speak.
